The first weekend of the NMJW Summer Music Festival continues with an eclectic night of of jazz from Albuquerque and Santa Fe based jazz musicians and composers, Brian Wingard Quartet/Ramon Bermudez and Howard Cloud Duo.

Brian Wingard Quartet—Originally from Ohio, Brian moved to New Mexico in 2005. Based in Espanola, NM, he has studied with such jazz greats as Bobby Shew and Eddie Daniels and performs regularly with his own group. He has also performed with local favorite, Arlen Asher as well as the group Straight Up.
Ramon Bermudez & Howard Cloud Duo (with special guests)-- Howard Cloud received his first bass at fifteen, studying along the way with legends such as, bassist Jerry Jemmott and Gary Willis. He’s opened for and played with Jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Norman Connors, “Peg Leg Bates Variety Show” and Jonathan Edwards. An East coast beginning of Jazz, R&B, Disco and Gospel blended with Reggae, Latin & Calypso music from the Caribbean has powered his talent. Howard has performed and recorded with various New Mexico artists including, Frank Leto, Joy Harjo, Hillary Smith, and Cathy McGill. He also leads his own jazz ensemble, Quadrant, and produces voice overs and enjoys teaching private bass lessons. Ramon Bermudez moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1986 to begin performances with his brother “a brilliant singer /songwriter” Juan Bermudez (the Bermudez Bros.) Through the years Ramon has developed several different musical presentations from Folk duos to Latin and Smooth Jazz improv trios and quartets, as well as a little classic rock and blues for good measure, all including original compositions in those formats.

The music of Ray Charles comes to life in Dreams of Yesterday—the Music of Ray Charles. The band features well known musicians Glenn Kostur, Bert Dalton, Jim Ahrend, Colin Deuble and Cal Haines in this tribute to the music legend. Sharing the bill is the Michael Herndon Quintet. Herndon electrifies audiences with powerful, soulful vocals, making this evening of Jazz & Blues Under the Stars a night to remember.
Michael Herndon Dreams of Yesterday--The Music of Ray Charles
Dreams of Yesterday-The Music of Ray Charles--Ray Charles was known for his own style of jazz, featured in this lively tribute to the legendary musician. His memorable melodies burst through in an all-instrumental concert highlighted by a full range of woodwinds, two keyboard players, bass and drums. Glenn Kostur on saxes, Bert Dalton and Jim Ahrend combine on keyboards, Colin Deuble on upright and electric bass and Cal Haines on drums. Ray Charles (1930-2004) was a magnet for Grammy’s, Honorary Doctorates and even the Polar Music Award from the King and Queen of Sweden. His musical genius - which covered genres from soul to pop to R&B, country and jazz - has been celebrated in cinema and biographies. The evening includes “Hit The Road Jack,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Oh, What A Beautiful Morning”, “Georgia” and many more.
Michael Herndon Quintet: Michael Herndon--Originally from New York City Michael has lived and performed in the Albuquerque area since 1988. Known for Dynamic style influenced by Jazz, R & B, and Gospel, he has demonstrated a fluidity and command of material from classical to reggae. Whether performing with his own ensemble Maiden Voyage, or performing as a solo artist he electrifies audiences with passion and conviction. Michael Also uses his talents as a lyricist and vocal arranger to several projects both local and national. During his career Michael has entertained on both concert stages with stadium capacities opening for acclaimed artists such as KoKo Taylor the undisputed Queen of Blues, and more intimate club stages performing with the likes of Kenny Neil Band and the Kinsey Report with equal comfort and command.

WOMEN’S VOICES – Timeless Standards. NMJW Summer Music Festival presents the first of two nights with some of the best local divas on the jazz scene in Albuquerque. Not “blues funk”, or any other sort of blues derivative. It's straight blues, no chaser. The sound is clean and hard-driving, with roots in the Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi Delta blues, with a little Chicago thrown in for good measure. Pleasure Pilots: The Pleasure Pilots is a Santa Fe, New Mexico based band specializing in old school styles of blues and R&B, as well as their own original music. Included in their repertoire are songs from the greats such as Amos Milburn, T-Bone Walker, Albert King, Ray Charles and Fats Domino. With a driving rhythm section, great horn section, powerful vocals and musicianship, they make an undeniably compelling force behind dancing feet!

Pete Amahl & Friends--Hard Bop Madness: Pete Amahl is a native of Massachusetts but has been an integral part of the Santa Fe and Albuquerque music scenes for over 35 years. He is highly regarded as a world class drummer and, along with being one of the founding members of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, has performed with some of America's finest talents such as Mose Allison, Eddie Harris, Natalie Cole, Herb Ellis and, in more recent years, Junior Brown. Joining Pete will be John Rangel (piano), Andy Zadrozny (bass), Paul Gonzales (trumpet) and special guest, Greg Abate on alto saxophone.

The NMJW Summer Music Festival ends with an all-star performance by Bebop super group, The Cookers. You won’t want to miss these giants of jazz in this ONE NIGHT ONLY event. Save by purchasing Summer Music Festival Passes - a Full Pass for 19 concerts ($250) or a Half Pass for 10 concerts ($130) may be purchased. These Pass tickets may be used singly for each concert or in multiples up to the number of concerts purchased. All passes for the NMJW Summer Music Festival expire on AUGUST 20th and may not be used in subsequent years or for subsequentNMJW performances or events. Unused passes are not redeemable for cash. (PLEASE NOTE: ALL passes are limited to TWO PUNCHES per show.)
PLEASE NOTE: Online sales for Jazz & Blues Under the Stars events end on the FRIDAY at 2:00 pm before the Saturday Jazz and or Blues concert, as we are not in the office on Saturdays. In-office sales for Jazz & Blues Under the Stars end at 2:00 pm on the Friday before the Saturday Jazz and or Blues concert. Unless the event is sold out, you may still purchase your tickets at the door on the evening of the concert. We highly advise the purchase of tickets in advance of the concert. We don't want you to miss a thing!
HOW DO I PURCHASE TICKETS???
There are several ways to purchase tickets to the Summer Music Festival:
- Buy your tickets ONLINE at Eventbrite. A small surcharge ($.99) is added to the price, or 10% per ticket, compared to 58% at Ticketmaster. You may purchase tickets ANYTIME. However, on FRIDAYS ticket sales for CURRENT EVENT end at 2pm. Ticket sales for SATURDAY ALSO END AT 2pm on FRIDAY, as the NMJW offices are CLOSED ON SATURDAYS. When you make a purchase using Eventbrite, your name is put on a Will Call list-- if you'r able, print your ticket-- it's just like having a ticket in hand! To buy online, Click HERE. Again, all online sales for the current weekend's performance end at 2PM.
- You may purchase tickets at the door on the day of the show starting at 6:30.
- You may call us to order tickets over the phone at 505-255-9798, Monday through Thursday and on Fridays until 2pm. You may pick up your tickets at WILL CALL, at the Albuquerque Museum on the evening of the performance, ONLY.
- You may visit our office (5500 Lomas NE, just East of San Mateo) MONDAY-THURSDAY, between the hours of 9 am -5pm and on FRIDAY from 9am-2pm.
